What happened in the world last week?

Some news was important but remained hidden due to other trending incidents that got hyped and took the mainstream media pages. This is fourth version of our last month series-First, Second, third.

Let us check some news that happened last week which may or may not have any geographic impact, however interesting.

Dubai has Drowned

Dubai has been floating with the heaviest rainfall in 75 years, some areas have received more than 250mm of rain in less than 24 hours. This type of rainfall was a surprise for this wealthy nation in the Middle East and it caused flooded streets, uprooted trees, and damaged buildings

Dubai Airport and Metro services were severely affected and most of the stations and airport terminals were also flooded with commuters having a difficult time wading through ankle-deep water.

In Oman, at least 18 people were killed in flash floods triggered by heavy rain.

The Middle East has a hot and dry climate and these countries’ infrastructure is not prepared for this unexpected rainfall.

New Chess Guinness World Record

A New Guinness World Record has been created by a Nigerian chess champion in New York City’s Times Square by playing chess nonstop for 60 hours.

Tunde Onakoya,29 surpassed the current chess marathon record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds, achieved in 2018 by Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad.

Nigeria’s former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo supported this by putting a post on the social media platform X, “Remember your own powerful words: ‘It is possible to do great things from a small place.”

North Korea launches “Friendly Father”

North Korea released a music video with leader Kim Jong Un for a propaganda song. It was released by the country’s state-run media on April 19, 2024, entitled “Friendly Father“.

A powerful pop-style piece of state propaganda praising North Korea’s dictatorial leader Kim Jong Un.

The video features cheering soldiers, and people from all age groups, praising and showing their belief and following him with one heart, Let us boast of Kim Jong Un, a friendly father!”

“Friendly Father” was also performed live, clips of which were aired by North Korean state TV.

North Korea remains one of the poorest countries on earth.

A New World Record for a dance on tiptoes?

A new world record has been created by hundreds of young ballerinas in New York’s Plaza Hotel, dancing on pointe in one place.

This was organized by the Youth America Grand Prix, the dancers are between 9 to 19. They stood on tiptoes and switched their weight rapidly from one foot to the other for a full minute.

Tina Shi, from Guinness World Records, declared the new world record with 353 number beating 306 number, the previous world record.

Airplane passenger fined in Sydney for urinating in a cup
