As you know the difference between Summer and Winter Olympics. To win a medal in either needs a lot of determination, hard work, training, and skills.

Can athletes win medals in both the Olympics? What do you think about this?

We were also curious about this question after completing our two-part series of the top 10 Olympians with the most Olympic medals in the Winter and Summer Olympics.

After digging deep, we were able to find six athletes who have won medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics, and this was exciting for us to know more about those two sports athletes.

Athletes with Medals in both Summer and Winter Olympics

There are only six athletes who have won medals in both the Olympics. Let us explore them.

1. Eddy Alvarez (2014-2020)

Eduardo Cortes Alvarez from the United States is one of the best athletes to win a medal in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. He is a short-track speed skater and a baseball player who has completed the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Games and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics Games. He won the silver medal in short track speedskating in Sochi 2014 and silver in Men’s baseball in Tokyo 2020.

2. Lauryn Williams (2004-2014)

Lauryn Williams from the United States is the first American woman to win a medal in the Summer and Winter Olympics. She won a silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 100m sprint and a gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics in the 4X100 relay. She competed and won silver in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi in two women bobsledders and became a member of the elite group to appear on the podium at both Olympic Games.

3. Clara Hughes (1996-2012)

Clara Hughes from Canada is one of the greatest multi-sports athletes ever with a total combined medal tally of 6 and became one of the most decorated Olympians from Canada. She won two bronze medals in the Cycle Road race and the time trial at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. She won four medals in the Winter Olympics in long-track speed skating including gold in 2006 Turin in 5000m, in the same Olympics she won silver in team pursuit. In 2002 Salt Lake City and 2010 Vancouver, she was able to win bronze in the 5000m race in her final skating event.

She competed in her last Olympics in 2012 London in cycling and finished fifth in the time trial. She was always involved in promoting sports and received the Sport and Community Award from the IOC in 2006. She was inducted into Canada’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

4. Christa Luding-Rothenburger (1984-1988)

Christa Luding-Rothenburger from Germany is the only athlete in any sport to win medals at both the Winter and Summer Games in the same year in speed skating and cycling. She was the Olympic Champion in 1984 Sarajevo and 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics in Speed skating. She won a silver medal in the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics in track cycling sprint and became the first and only person to win medals in both Olympics in the same year in 1988.

5. Jacob Tullin Thams (1924-1936)

Jacob Tullin Tulla Thams from Norway was a multi-sports athlete who won medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics in ski Jumping and sailing. He was Olympic Champion in the 1924 Chamonix Olympics in ski jumping and won a silver medal in the 1936 Berlin Olympics in 8m sailing.

6. Eddie Eagan (1920-1932)

Edward Patrick Francis Eagan from the United States is the only multi-sports athlete to win a gold medal at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games in different sports. He was the Olympic Champion in the light heavyweight boxing competition in the 1920 Antwerp Summer Olympics.

He was the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Champion in four-man bobsleigh and entered his name as one of the greatest athletes with gold medals in both Olympics.
