Nine Lives, One Miracle: Mali’s Nonuplets Reach Their Third Birthday

The world’s only surviving Nonuplets have celebrated their third birthday recently. Yes. You have read it right. Nine babies were born at the same time to a Malian couple on 4 May 2021.

Initially, due to its oddness and uniqueness, people took it as a prank, however, as they celebrated their first birthday, Guinness World Records declared their record certificates of the most children who survived after birth at the same time.

We found this life miracle interesting after Conjoined Twins, Abby & Brittney Hensel, and Carmen Andrade and Lupita Andrade miracles.

The previous record for most children delivered at a single birth to survive was held by “Nadya Suleman’s eight children from the USA in 2009. Her Nickname is “Octomom”.

It was a high-risk pregnancy, Halima Cisse and her husband, Abdelkader Arby from Mali traveled to Morocco to seek expert medical care. Halima gave birth to nine babies prematurely at 30 weeks.

Each baby weighed between 0.5–1 kg (1.1–2.2 lb) which was quite little, most babies were in incubators for almost three months, and everyone was worried about their survival as the probability of surviving was very low.

As per Britannica, “Australian woman gave birth to nonuplets on June 13, 1971, for the first time, however five boys and four girls (two boys were stillborn) died within a week”.

They were given constant care and all the support required to increase their survival chances. They were moved to an apartment in Morocco where they stayed till their return to their country.

All the babies were healthy, and they returned to Mali after staying 18 months in Morocco.

The five baby girls (Adama, Oumou, Hawa, Kadidia, Fatouma) and four baby boys (Oumar, Elhadji, Bah, and Mohammed VI) are healthy and meeting their developmental milestones.

In a short video, Cissé shared the challenge she has faced is, the Bedtime.

“All of them want to sleep at the same time and It’s not easy,” Cissé, 27, told Guinness World Records.

She added, “They like to cuddle, and we cuddle them so they can sleep,”

Abdelkader Arby, a father said,” Each has its personality, we are trying to understand them all”.

They were invited to appear on a TV talent show,” Lo Show Dei Record” in Italy two months before their 3rd birthday.

Interestingly, the parents were expecting seven babies as they were told at the beginning of seven as ultrasound sessions were not able to spot two of her babies., however, upon reaching Morocco, they were told the exact nine number.

Additionally, the couple are parents to a four-year-old daughter.

Parents are thankful to all the doctors in Mali and Morocco, especially, Malian authorities and King Mohammed V1 of Morocco who allowed them to enter Morocco in the middle of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Mali govt bears all the expenses for the couple.
